Drink Your Food

Mahatma Gandhi rightly said — Chew your drink and drink your food. He was focusing on the benefits of chewing. Chew each morsel 32 times, once for each tooth before swallowing it. It will improve your gut health and induce proper digestion which will keep you away from heartburn, acid reflux, bloating, gas, constipation, nausea, and many more stomach related diseases. Further, it is said that you are not just what you eat, you are the reflection of how you eat.

The benefits of chewing can be wrapped up as follows: -

1. Digestion starts from the mouth and chewing food particles loaded with saliva ease the process. Saliva contains amylase enzyme; it breaks down starch into simpler sugars which our body absorbs easily.

2. When properly chewed food get mix with enzymes, the small intestine absorbs more amount of nutrient and micronutrient such as Carbohydrates, Lipids (fats), Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals, Water and dietary fiber. Enzyme are proteins and it speeds up the chemical reaction in the body by breaking down large food molecules to small molecules.

3. If you chew food properly it reduces the overall intake of food. You will relish every bite and savor the taste. The more you swallow the more you are tempted to eat, the stomach also takes time to convey to the brain that you are full. As a study says it takes 20 minutes to signal your brain that your stomach is full. So, the slower you eat the more satiety and pleasure you will feel even in small intake of food.

4. When we eat less, our weight will reduce steadily. More often, we eat more than we require. We don’t let our stomach be empty and very much eager to fill it just like a dump yard.

5. When you chew every mouthful 32 times, you will automatically be mindful. Your intake will be less and you will feel energetic and light instead of heavy and drowsy.

6. Sudden drinking water before and after a meal dilutes the digestive enzyme and causes indigestion, bloating, gas, heartburn, and acidity. So, drinking water one hour before and after a meal not only help you in proper digestion but also to get rid of many problems.
